This holiday honors Nevadans’ perseverance in the face of adversity and pays tribute to those who were instrumental in their entrance to the United States. πŸ“œ History of Nevada Day

After attaining independence in 1821, Mexico assumed control over Nevada as part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. However, following the United States’ victory in the Mexican-American War in 1848, the state was quickly reclaimed by the United States and incorporated into the Utah Territory in 1850.

After the discovery of silver at the Comstock Lode in 1859, Nevada established itself as an important contributor to American soil. Because of this finding, Nevada became known as the “Silver State.” to many people. This also resulted in a population surge, which was critical in the settlement’s departure from the Utah Territory in 1861. Nevada became the 36th state to join the United States on October 31, 1864. Nevada, along with West Virginia, was one of only two states given statehood during the Civil War. This came after telegraphing the Nevada Constitution only days before the November 8 Presidential Election. This was the largest and most costly telegraph transmission ever recorded at the time. Its statehood was hastened in order to assure Abraham Lincoln’s reelection with three elector votes, which also increased the Republican congressional majority.
