Throughout its existence, Nickelodeon has launched a number of sibling channels and specialty programming blocks. Nickelodeon debuted “Nick Jr.,” an hour-long morning program aimed at toddlers, on January 4, 1988. On August 11, 1991, the network’s second flagship brand was “Nicktoons,” an original animated series produced for the network. The “Nicktoons” brand’s twin channel, “Nicktoons Junior,” debuted in 2002. In 1999, Nickelodeon and Sesame Workshop created a collaboration to create “Noggin,” an educational brand that includes a cable channel and an online game. In 2009, two stations aimed towards teens, “TEENick” and “The N,” were merged into a single channel, “TeenNick,”
Today, about 87.167 million homes in the United States have access to the channel. In addition to producing feature films, Nickelodeon periodically purchases theatrically released films for broadcast on the channel. Nickelodeon and Mattel inked a long-term broadcast agreement in 2002 to air films and specials based on Mattel’s “Barbie” dolls. On November 24, 2002, “Barbie as Rapunzel” was the first Barbie movie to air on Nickelodeon.
During the channel’s annual events, which take place all around the world each year, children can engage in a variety of outdoor activities. Some of the network’s foreign channels and websites are often taken down these days to get more kids involved in the campaign.
