No Name-Calling Week

No Name-Calling Week for the year 2023 is celebrated/observed on Sunday, January 16th. There are until the next observance.

During the third week of January, No Name-Calling Week is held to educate students, teachers, and the general public about the dangers of name-calling. It will be held this year from January 16 to January 20. People have been given derogatory names because of their weight, height, IQ, sexual orientation, and other factors over which they have little or no influence. While some people think that name-calling is harmless fun, victims of such slurs typically feel uncomfortable, embarrassed, and harassed to the point that they lose self-esteem, feel undesired in their immediate surroundings, and experience mental anguish. Name-calling causes psychological harm to victims, forcing some to withdraw or ponder suicide.

This year, No Name-Calling Week falls on the 3rd Sunday in January; in 2023, it is on Monday.

📜 History of No Name-Calling Week

Although name-callers may enjoy it, victims of bad deeds are upset, especially if they are being called horrible names for things about themselves that they cannot change. Several films have portrayed the negative repercussions that name-calling may have on victims. When Bianca, the major character in the 2015 film “The Duff,” discovered that her classmates had nicknamed her DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend), she was devastated. After being subjected to sexual orientation ridicule, Conor, the rugby genius of the 2016 film “Handsome Devil,” withdrew from the public and nearly lost a well-deserved rugby game victory to his bully after being subjected to sexual orientation ridicule.

Name-calling has grown so common in American schools that a poll indicated that around 75% of elementary school kids acknowledged being called names in school, while approximately 65% of middle and high school students stated that name-calling was a severe issue in their schools.
