Every year on May 27, “Nothing to Fear Day” is commemorated. President Franklin D. Roosevelt remarked on this day in 1941 that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Fear is a vital and normal survival response. It may, however, be a bad feeling if it drives us to act unreasonably. When we allow fear to govern our lives, we view things differently, become more cautious and timid, or overreact to situations in potentially disastrous ways for ourselves and others. Nothing to Fear Day is an opportunity to assess oneself and identify one’s anxieties. It leads us to do things that prevent us from becoming our best selves.
