📜 History of Old New Year’s Day

In Mesopotamia, the New Year was celebrated around the time of the spring equinox, which occurred around March 25. There were just around ten months remaining. The calendar was based on the seasons at the time, and the planting season began in March. As a result, it was chosen as the year’s first month. With March being the first month of the year, it was only natural for the seventh month (September in Latin), the eighth month “octo,” the ninth month “novem,” and the tenth month “decem” to be called.

Rome began celebrating the New Year on January 1st of each year. Around 700 B.C., Rome’s second ruler, Numa Pontilius, added the months of January and February to the calendar. The freshly elected Roman consuls began their one-year tenure at this time, hence it became the start of the year. Julius Caesar founded the Julian calendar in 46 B.C., with January as the first month of the year. It was based on the motions of the sun and was a major advance over the old Roman lunar calendar. Later investigation proved that the lunar calendar was completely erroneous.
