📜 History of Panama Mother’s Day

The Catholic Panamanians allegedly planned to make the feast of the Immaculate Conception a national holiday, but were met with opposition from members of the secular population who wanted to keep church and state activities apart. They all agreed to celebrate Mother’s Day in conjunction with the feast.

On this day, towns will stage huge processions through local streets, and festivities will last all day.

In the indigenous Ngäbe villages, the entire community comes together to celebrate. The women will dress to the nines, decorating themselves with jewelry and applying cosmetics. The men will arrange a large feast for everyone to eat and drink. As night falls, music is played, and everyone dances until the wee hours of the morning.
