📜 History of Peace Corps Day
In 1950, Walter Reuther, President of the United Auto Workers, advocated that the United States establish a volunteer organization for American youngsters to be transported across the globe to conduct humanitarian tasks. Although Kennedy acknowledged the establishment of the Peace Corps, Senator Hubert H. Humphrey Jr. spearheaded the project. In 1957, three years before Kennedy, he submitted the first bill to establish the Peace Corps.
Those interested in becoming Peace Corps volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be a citizen of the United States, and apply six to nine months before they wish to depart. Applicants can only apply to one placement per year and can filter their application by country of preference. The placement is typically distributed across the six project sectors. They are supposed to serve in the foreign nation for two years after being selected as volunteers, after which they must have undergone three months of training. Prior to 2014, the application procedure might take up to a year.
