Pflasterspektakel Linz for the year 2024 is celebrated/observed on Friday, July 21st. There are until the next observance.

Pflasterspektakel Linz will be held this year from July 21 to July 23. For three days each July, this event—which translates to “pavement spectacle” in German—brings together dancers, mimes, musicians, high-wire walkers, clowns, fire twirlers, acrobats, and other artists that defy categorization and occasionally gravity. Pflasterspektakel transforms three days in the summer into a citywide “Cirque du Soleil.” The heart of it all is Hauptplatz, a big and gorgeous city plaza topped by the 60-foot-tall Trinity Column, which, incidentally, remembers the victims of the Black Plague. Over 200,000 people braved the rain in Linz to see what these colorfully dressed artists had to offer.

📜 History of Pflasterspektakel Linz

The next year, Linz Pflasterspektakel was revived, this time with the current name and with acrobats, magicians, and mimes in addition to musicians. Eastern Bloc artists played in Linz in 1989, soon before the Berlin Wall came down. The organizers had to select a smaller group of performers that year due to the huge volume of entries. More than 250,000 people attended the Pflasterspektakel in 2000 and numerous years afterward to watch performers from throughout the world.

The Pflasterspektakel begins on a Thursday at 4 p.m. with an opening ceremony, and the festival itself starts on the following Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m. Every day the bar shuts at midnight; however, some musicians play in bars until one in the morning. On Saturday nights, the usual finale is performed in the central plaza by impromptu ensembles of artists. More than 40 locations across Linz, including the Landstraße and the city’s main square, will host performances. In one of the two courtyards, musicians are invited to sing unplugged or a cappella. During bad weather, the event is moved indoors to locations like the historic city hall and others.
