📜 History of Phileas Fogg Win a Wager Day

Prior to this, in 1870, three important developments made a tourist-like around-the-world trip conceivable for the first time. This change in circumnavigation interested Jules Verne because his character, Phileas Fogg, was based on the real-life trip around the world of the brave American writer William Perry Fogg.

Before we knew it, the story had been serialized beginning on December 21, 1872, and had been released in book form on January 30, 1973. It’s no surprise that December 21 was picked as the most important wagering day in the book. Or did it? People assumed the travel was taking place in real time due to the synchronicity of dates!

When Phileas Fogg debates the plausibility of going around the world in 80 days in the novel, his other club members challenge him to prove it. The argument is based on an article in “The Daily Telegraph” about the construction of a new railway segment in India, which would potentially allow you to go around the world in just 80 days. Later that evening, on October 2, 1872, Fogg departs London with his servant without delay. To win the wager – and £20,000 – he had to return to the club at the same hour on December 21, 1872. He wins, and we still celebrate his victory 140 years later.
