The observance of this day was moved from December 7 to October 20 when the then-President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, issued Proclamation No. 1592 on August 20, 2008. Peter Beckingham, the then-UK Ambassador to the Philippines, campaigned for the date modification. The date was adjusted to coincide with the opening of the new British Embassy in Taguig City’s McKinley Hill.

During the early 16th century, the two countries developed trading ties. The British took Manila and the port of Cavite between 1762 and 1764.
