📜 History of President’s Day in Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea observes President’s Day as a national holiday on the president’s birthday, Teodoro Obiang. The second-longest continuously serving non-loyal national leader in history is Obiang. After completing military training, he served in a number of capacities in the Francisco Macias Nguema administration until overthrowing him in an August 1979 military takeover.

This coup was launched after Macias gave the order to assassinate numerous members of their shared family, including Obiang’s brother. Because Obiang and other people thought the president had gone mad and deposed him in a coup, Macias was placed on trial for his crimes, including the extermination of the Bubi people that he had been doing for 10 years prior. Following his conviction, Macias was given the death penalty. He was executed by a firing squad on September 29, 1979. Equatorial Guinea was put back under civilian rule in 1982, and Obiang was elected to lead the country for seven years.
