📜 History of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday

Muhammad’s birthday is commemorated at mosques with religious lectures and Quranic verse recitations. Early celebrations of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday may be traced back to the eighth century, when al-Khayzuran turned the home where Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) was born into a place of worship. Public celebrations of Muhammad’s birth didn’t start until 400 years after he died. The oldest Mawlid manuscript comes from the 12th century and is most likely from Persia, according to literary evidence.

Sunni and Shia Muslims observe the day in distinct ways. Shiites believe that on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, Prophet Muhammad picked Hazrat Ali to replace him. Sunnis don’t have a day of mourning on this day. Instead, they pray every day during the month.

Recitations of Islamic poetry from the Mawlid were widespread on television, stage, and from Abu Dhabi’s Bahar Palace in the 1970s and 1980s. Back then, the Mawlid was done more often, but now it’s only done when Prophet Muhammad’s birthday comes around.
