📜 History of Qatar National Day

This holiday was originally observed on September 3, which coincided with Qatar’s independence in 1971, but it was later changed to December 18. The commemorated union included several conflicts for survival and freedom. Qatar was once reliant on the Bahraini Al Khalifas on the Qatari peninsula’s eastern shore, but resentment grew and rebels rose against the Khalifas, who dispatched naval forces to defeat the rebels in Al Wakrah in 1867, in violation of the General Maritime Treaty of 1820. The British then reprimanded Bahrain and negotiated with Qatar, which was headed by Sheik Muhammed bin Thani, whose family still exists today.

Qatar became a British protectorate in 1916, and it didn’t get its independence until the British left the Persian Gulf politically. This happened in 1968, after the stresses of World War II.
