In 1946, Ralph Benjamin invented the trackball, a similar pointing device. Douglas Engelbart of the Stanford Research Institute invented the computer mouse. Engelbart established a research unit at S.R.I. in 1963 to pursue his objective of “enhancement” of human intellect via the use of both hardware and software computer technology.
