By many measures, Rhode Island is a one-of-a-kind state. It was the first to proclaim independence from the United Kingdom in 1776. Native Americans have lived in Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay for thousands of years. English immigrants arrived in the early 17th century. In 1636, Roger Williams purchased territory from neighboring tribes and formed the province. He had fled religious persecution and hoped to build a secular town. In some ways, Rhode Island is the only state that was founded by a refugee. The place quickly became a refuge for people who didn’t fit in with society or who were running away from religious or political persecution.

Rogue’s Island was eventually given to Rhode Island. The community that grew up in the area valued free thought and tolerance. They were the first to demand the formation of a Continental Congress. Rhode Island played an important role in the American Revolution, providing 25,236 men in answer to President Lincoln’s request. They also used their industrial prowess to aid civil war operations. Even throughout the world wars, Rhode Island sent around 28,817 men.
