📜 History of Sally Ride Day
Dr. Richard Ride was an astronaut who was born on May 26, 1951, in Los Angeles, California. Prior to attending U.C.L.A., she attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. Ride earned a Bachelor of Arts in both English and physics from Stanford University in 1973. In 1975, she graduated from Stanford with a master’s degree in physics. She got a Ph.D. in physics in 1978. Her studies focused on how X-rays interact with the interstellar medium. Out of 8,000 applicants, Ride was one of just 35 people chosen for the NASA astronaut training program. She was a member of the first group of female American astronauts (NASA Astronaut Group 8). On the second mission of the Orbit Shuttle Challenger, Dr. Ride traveled to space as the mission specialist on STS-7. The STS-7 was launched from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on June 18, 1983.
