📜 History of Salvation Army Founder’s Day

Booth was unemployed when his apprenticeship finished in 1848, so he travelled to London and found employment with a pawnbroker a year later. Booth joined the Methodist Reform Church in 1851, and on his 23rd birthday, he gave up pawnbroking to become a full-time preacher at the church’s headquarters. In 1855, Booth married Catherine Mumford, a Methodist Reform Church member. In 1865, Booth and Catherine founded The Christian Revival Society in London’s East End, which was eventually renamed the Christian Mission. Their primary goal was to teach people about the teachings of Jesus Christ in a way that they could understand, by meeting wherever they saw fit and supplying their basic needs. They wanted to reach out to people who had been turned away by traditional churches, especially the poor and those who didn’t have much.

The Christian Mission was renamed The Salvation Army in 1878. A year later, Salvationist Amos Shirley worked informally for The Salvation Army and traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After discovering this, Booth decided to send a small delegation to New York, including George Scott Railton and seven others, to formally launch The Salvation Army’s operations in 1880. The Salvation Army expanded to Australia the same year. Catherine Booth-Clibborn, commonly known as la Maréchale, Booth’s eldest daughter, hosted the inaugural meetings in Paris in 1881. The company’s international development was rapid and extended to other nations. Booth’s approach was to work with people in a culturally acceptable way, combining service and evangelism.
