General Morazán was a Central American politician who presided over the Federal Republic of Central America as President from 1830 until 1839. He was President of Honduras before becoming President of Central America, and he rose to prominence during the Battle of La Trinidad on November 11, 1827. Morazán then controlled the political and military landscape of Central America until his execution in 1842. Honduras was home to numerous prominent Mesoamerican cultures before the Spanish invasion in the 16th century, most notably the Maya. Honduras obtained independence in 1821 and has been a republic ever since, despite social turmoil and political instability. It remains one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere.

Morazánica Week’s purpose is to encourage domestic tourism. According to the president of Honduras’ National Chamber of Tourism, Morazánica Week generates over 20,000 jobs and generates an estimated profit of over two million lempiras.
