Montenegro celebrates Sovereignty Day on July 13 to commemorate the day on July 13, 1878, when the Berlin Congress acknowledged Montenegro as an independent state. This is not to be confused with Montenegro’s Independence Day, which falls on May 21. 📜 History of Sovereignty Day of Montenegro

However, because Nicholas I, the king, oversaw Montenegro, it wasn’t seen as a democracy. In 1910, it was formally proclaimed a kingdom, although this did not last very long. After the First World War, Montenegro allied with Serbia in 1918 and later joined Yugoslavia. Up until the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia’s dissolution in 1992, this situation persisted for a number of years. Following this, Montenegro and Serbia combined to establish the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia; the two nations didn’t have their own names until 2003. Eventually, Montenegro severed ties with Serbia in 2006 so that it could achieve complete independence. During the same year, it also joined the UN.

On July 13, Montenegro also marks the anniversary of another key event in its history. The mass rebellion against the Nazi occupation of Europe during World War II started on this day in 1941.
