The classical public speaking tradition was resurrected during the Enlightenment Period, which began around 1600 A.D. Extempore, Just a Minute, Elocution, and other styles of public speaking entered the scene. Universities established departments that taught communication and provided numerous public speaking exercises, as well as soft-skills courses, to help students advance in their professional careers.
