📜 History of Spring Astronomy Day

The sky was viewed as a celestial sphere by Babylonian astronomers, who grouped stars into constellations. The ancient Greeks built their belief system on factual data gathered by studying the movement of the stars. They proposed a geocentric model of the cosmos in which a stationary, spherical Earth was at the center of the universe. For the following two millennia, this idea was widely accepted in Western Civilization; only when Copernicus suggested a heliocentric (a solar system with the sun at the center) model did things alter. This cosmology was accepted by Isaac Newton and Christian Huygens, among others. Philosophers and thinkers like Kant, Wright, and Herschel made sure that astronomy kept getting better.
Physical cosmology, a branch of astronomy, entered the modern age in 1917, when Einstein applied his general theory of relativity to the dynamics of the cosmos. Edwin Hubble’s subsequent findings dramatically altered people’s conceptions of the universe. He originally demonstrated that the Andromeda galaxy was both distinct from and comparable to the Milky Way galaxy. Following that, he found and demonstrated the migration of distant galaxies away from one another as though the universe was expanding. Today, astronomy is a branch of physics, chemistry, and meteorology, but its purpose remains the same as that of the first priests who set out to survey the heavens: “understanding the workings of the cosmos.”
