📜 History of Thailand Constitution Day

The People’s Party sought to persuade the king to relinquish power through a constitutional monarchy, which would keep him as head of state, military commander, and defender of all religions. The king first refused. However, on December 10, 1932, he let his powers be revoked while remaining king. The bloodless coup curtailed the king’s power and granted the people the right to vote for government representatives. Thailand has had 20 constitutions created since then. The first democratic elections with half of the People’s Assembly were conducted on November 7, 1937. It was also the first time that women were allowed the right to vote. The first election with the whole People’s Assembly took place shortly after World War II, in 1946.

Thailand’s most democratic constitution, granting citizens full democratic rights, was not drafted until 1997. Thailand is now using its new Constitution from 2017, which gives the parliament two houses and keeps the military in charge.
