📜 History of The Sandinista Revolution Day

The struggle was far from over, despite the Sandinista National Liberation Front’s extensive and exhausting effort that eventually resulted in the country’s liberation. The U.S. government started supporting various militias in numerous Central American nations at the beginning of the 1980s in an effort to stop the spread of Marxist organizations in the region. In the end, this led to the start of the Contra War, in which the Sandinista National Liberation Front fought against the US-backed Contra militias.

Despite the armed conflicts of the Contra War, Nicaraguans started building their nation in the middle of the 1980s. In 1984, the first national elections were held. The American president at the time, Ronald Reagan, denounced the Nicaraguan elections while continuing to back the Contra soldiers. The elections were won by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (S.N.L.F.) by a sizable margin. Soon after, the Esquipulas Peace Agreement to put an end to the hostilities in the region was being drafted by foreign ministers from a number of Latin American nations, including Colombia, Mexico, and Panama. 1990 marked the conclusion of the Contra War, which had lasted 11 years.
