📜 History of Titanic Remembrance Day

It set sail from Southampton, England, on its inaugural trip across the Atlantic Ocean on April 10. But just before midnight on April 14, it didn’t change its course away from an iceberg. This caused at least five holes in the ship’s hull, which let water in and sank the ship when it broke in two.

More than 1,500 passengers died aboard the sinking ship or froze to death in the chilly North Atlantic waters due to a lack of lifeboats and inadequate emergency protocols. The vast majority of the 700 or so survivors were women and children. Several important Americans and British people died in the disaster, including the well-known British journalist William Thomas Stead and the heirs to the Straus, Astor, and Guggenheim families.

The survivors lost everything on board and were assisted by people and charity from all around the world. Numerous women’s rescue groups assisted ladies in supplying clothing, and several private trains took on the task of transferring survivors to their immediate families for free.
