Togo’s Independence Day is celebrated annually on April 27. On this day, Togo commemorates its independence from the French overseas colonial empire in 1960. Togo gets its name from the indigenous tribes’ language, which means “a place where lagoons lie.” Today marks the beginning of another year of commemorating the country’s independence. Togo, also called the Togolese Republic or the République togolaise, is a country in West Africa. It is bordered on the west by Ghana, on the east by Benin, and on the north by Burkina Faso.

📜 History of Togo Independence Day (Togo)
Following the allied attack on the little colony, German forces were soon annihilated, causing the colony to capitulate on August 26, 1914. In 1916, Togoland was divided between the winning sides, culminating in the establishment of the new colonies of British Togoland and French Togoland. During WWI, Britain and France captured Togoland, establishing the Anglo-French condominium. On December 7, 1916, the condominium crumbled, and Togo was divided into British and French zones. On July 20, 1922, the League of Nations assigned the western section of Togo to the United Kingdom and the eastern portion to France. The nation was granted the authority to send three members of parliament to the French parliament in 1945.
Following WWII, these mandates were renamed United Nations Trust Territories. In 1957, the residents of British Togoland opted to join the Gold Coast as a part of the newly formed Ghana. French Togoland was given autonomy within the French Union in 1959, but France retained control over defense, foreign affairs, and the economy. The Togolese Republic was created on April 27, 1960. In 1961, Sylvanus Olympio was elected president for the first time. He won all of the votes, since the opposition didn’t show up to the election.
