📜 History of Uncle Sam Day

During the War of 1812, Sam Wilson, a meatpacker from New York, distributed barrels of beef to soldiers. Wilson would mark the barrels with “U.S.” to designate the meat for transportation. It wasn’t long before the soldiers connected the US stamp with Sam Wilson personally and began jokingly calling him “Uncle Sam.” This moniker quickly gained popularity.

However, the initial depiction of Uncle Sam is not the one we are familiar with today. The youthful Uncle Sam is shown in Harper’s Weekly in 1861, with a bandana on his head and a striped waistcoat, splitting up Virginia like a butcher. Throughout the years, the image of Uncle Sam has been updated to reflect the country’s political situation. The Uncle Sam emblem, however, was conceived by German-born painter and cartoonist Thomas Nast, who created the long-legged Uncle Sam we know today. Uncle Sam may now be identified by his starred top hat and striped slacks. Surprisingly, this Uncle Sam made his debut in Harper’s Weekly as well. Uncle Sam has been re-created in color in the present period. During World War I, the United States Army used the artwork for the “I Want You For The U.S. Army” campaign. It debuted on the cover of Leslie’s Weekly.
