📜 History of Vietnam Peace Day
Viet Minh soldiers took advantage of the situation and occupied the northern capital of Hanoi, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam with Ho as President. On the other hand, in July, Bao established the state of Vietnam, with Saigon as its capital. While Ho desired a socialist model, Bao desired a country with Western culture. This was the struggle that pitted North Vietnam’s communist government against South Vietnam.
Following its strategy of opposing any Soviet Union allies, the United States entered the conflict by supporting South Vietnam in 1954. After a lengthy and horrible two decades of war, the United States and North Vietnam signed the final peace treaty in January 1973, withdrawing their forces from Vietnam. Vietnam Peace Day was born at this time. The battle between North and South Vietnam, however, lasted another 15 years. Today, Vietnam’s economy is expanding, and its people are breathing in the pure air of liberty. Let’s remember and honor the hundreds of thousands of lives that were lost during this war on Vietnam Peace Day.
