📜 History of Visit the Zoo Day

In 1793, Paris, France, erected the first “modern” zoo. The contemporary and public zoo appears to have gained popularity in the 18th century, during the Age of Enlightenment, when science became a more important pillar of society. People wanted to study animals in order to better understand their anatomy and behavior, among other reasons. In 1828, the city of London also got its first modern zoo. Animals from the Tower of London menagerie were subsequently added to its collection, and the zoo opened to the public in 1847.

The goal of early modern zoos was not to serve as natural homes for the animals held there. Instead, they resembled museums with live animals maintained in tiny display spaces. Zoos now seek to educate and amuse the public while also enhancing scientific study and encouraging animal conservation.
