📜 History of World Fair Trade Day

She had established her modest company by the 1950s. She drove her needlework-filled vehicle to women’s sewing circles and parties around the country. As she did so, she informed the American people about the origins of these pieces of art and the women’s craftsmanship. Because of this, the women of the La Plata Valley were able to get a stable income, and Byler was also able to do well in her own life.

What began as a seemingly insignificant act of kindness became a movement when the company was renamed Ten Thousand Villages. People all throughout the world were coming to recognize that employees needed to be taken care of. The first Fair Trade Organization was established in 1964 with measures to improve labor relations amongst Chinese refugees in Oxfam stores exporting crafts to the UK. The original Fair Trade Organization was founded in the Netherlands in 1967 with comparable objectives.

The World Fair Trade Organization, formerly known as the International Federation of Alternative Traders, was founded in 1989. They would host yearly conferences for fair trade groups to deliberate on the best practices for working conditions, and in 2004 they established World Fair Trade Day. The ongoing objective is to combat poverty and exploitation, climate change, and the economic crisis in order to safeguard society’s most vulnerable members.
