📜 History of World Meningitis Day

The inaugural World Meningitis Day was celebrated in 2008, and the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations (CoMO) has utilized it every year thereafter to raise awareness of meningitis as a worldwide public health concern. The campaign has historically taken place on April 24th, but in order to allow more people to participate, it has been changed to October 5th, while we work to get it recognized as an official health day. If we can establish World Meningitis Day as an official health day, we will be able to use a broader platform to reach out to more people with potentially life-saving information about meningitis.

The rationale for the shift in date is that the campaign was formerly held in April and was usually wedged between two other big health initiatives, making it hard for more partners to participate meaningfully. By shifting the date to October 5, it is hoped that more people will be able to rally behind the same message and join the fight to eradicate meningitis by 2030. WHO’s Roadmap to Defeat Meningitis by 2030 includes increased worldwide recognition of World Meningitis Day. The campaign is acknowledged as an essential component of the “Advocacy and Engagement” theme, which seeks to increase public and political awareness of meningitis and its consequences. CoMO is now working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to make World Meningitis Day an official health day.
