World Parrot Day for the year 2024 is celebrated/observed on Wednesday, May 31st. There are until the next observance.

World Parrot Day, observed on May 31, commemorates the parrot as a phenomenon. The order Psittaciformes has 398 bird species classified into 92 genera. Parrots are usually found in the tropics and subtropics. The order Psittaciformes is classified into three superfamilies: the “Psittacidae,” or “real parrots,” the “cockatoos,” and the “Strigopidea,” or “New Zealand parrots.” One-third of all parrot species are now endangered, making them the birds with the highest overall extinction risk of any bird group. Parrots are found all throughout the world, with some species being found in temperate zones of the Southern Hemisphere. Robust, curved beaks, an erect stance, strong legs, and clawed feet are all characteristics of parrots. Many parrots are brightly colored, and others are multi-hued. Most parrots have minimal to no sexual dimorphism in the visual spectrum. In terms of length, they are the most varied bird order.

📜 History of World Parrot Day

Some of the most popular imports from these expedition journeys were parrots, especially those from South America, Africa, and India. In addition to being colorful and simple to domesticate, parrots also made for comparatively simple transportation on the arduous and miserable sea trips back to Europe. Few people understood the needs of parrots, and as a result, many birds perished while traveling. Parrots, on the other hand, fared significantly better than more fragile bird species. Parrots, pheasants, ostriches, and other long-lived and generally simple-to-keep birds are mentioned in records of animals housed in menageries, the forerunner of zoos, aristocratic private collections, and artwork of birds from the 16th to the 18th century. Few owners give their pet parrots the chance to express and show their most fundamental bird instincts, such as flight, flocking, and mate-finding, leaving the majority of pet parrots relatively “fresh out” of the wild since they are only a few generations away from the wild.
