Yom HaAtzmaut for the year 2024 is celebrated/observed on Tuesday, April 25th. There are until the next observance.

Yom Ha’atzmaut will be observed on April 25 and 26 this year. The day, also known as Israel’s Independence Day, comes in late April or early May, according to the Hebrew calendar’s 5th day of Iyar. If the 5th Iyar falls on a Jewish Sabbath, the date is shifted by one day. Because the Hebrew calendar begins the day in the dark, Yom Ha’atzmaut falls on two days. There was a lot of opposition to Israel’s drive for their own state in Palestine, but they did not give up, therefore Yom Ha’atzmaut.

📜 History of Yom HaAtzmaut

Following World War I, the United Kingdom was handed the mandate for Palestine. The Peel Commission proposed splitting Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab governments, but the government thought this impractical at the time. This refusal is thought to be the catalyst for the Great Palestinian Revolt against the British authorities. Following World War II, the revolt and bloodshed spiraled out of control, and the British administration delegated responsibility to the newly founded United Nations. As a consequence, Resolution 181(II) was drafted, which called for the partition of Palestine into independent Arab and Jewish states, as well as the establishment of a Special International Regime for the City of Jerusalem. The Jewish population welcomed this, while the Arab community was vehemently opposed.

The development and signing of the proclamation wording was fraught with conflict and terrible consequences. The Arabs intervened in several ways, and even the proclamation ceremony was chaotic. The moment had come, however, to recognize Israel as an independent state. The award was given to David Ben-Gurion, the Executive Director of the World Zionist Organization and Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Palestine. On May 14, 1948, the proclamation was made, and David Ben-Gurion was appointed as the first Prime Minister of the State of Israel. This took effect when the British Mandate expired at midnight on that day.
