📜 History of Canada Day

Although Dominion Day was created in 1879, few Canadians observed it since they still considered themselves to be British citizens. This changed in 1917, with the Confederation’s 50th anniversary, when Dominion Day began to gain popularity. A bill to rename Dominion Day was introduced in 1946, but it never passed because of disagreements about the proposed name in the House of Commons.

There was a surge of Canadian patriotism in 1967 as the country celebrated its 100th anniversary, and festivities really got going. Citizens would refer to the celebration as “Canada Day” even before it was made official, and the term was officially recognized in 1982.

Canadians like celebrating Canada Day with traditional Canadian cuisine such as poutine, baklava, and beaver tails (deep-fried bread dough with cinnamon and chili).

Get out to a Parade
Many Canadian communities will conduct parades on Canada Day, replete with pyrotechnics, street food, and marching bands. Nothing says “Canadian” like getting out and celebrating with your neighbors.
