But it wasn’t always like this. There were no nonstop flights from St. Louis to the Oregon coast when President Jefferson asked Lewis (and, subsequently, Clark) to explore the American West in 1804. According to the History Channel, “The journey lasted two years. They encountered hard weather, unforgiving terrain, hazardous waterways, injuries, malnutrition, sickness, and both friendly and unfriendly Native Americans along the journey. Despite this, the 8,000-mile voyage was regarded as a major success, providing “fresh topographical, biological, and sociological knowledge about previously unexplored portions of North America.”
And now we’re complaining about attempting to fit our carry-ons into the overhead bin.
Americans have long enjoyed “going for a ride” in whatever method of transportation was available. Horses, boats, bicycles And, of course, there is the omnipresent automobile. The nation has had a lengthy love affair with vehicles, beginning in the mid-twentieth century and extending until recently, when a new generation of car purchasers, born after the car mania, lost interest in appearance and instead focused on practicality. Priuses are as attractive as Porsches due to their excellent gas mileage. So, almost.
