According to the History Channel, “The journey lasted two years. They encountered hard weather, unforgiving terrain, hazardous waterways, injuries, malnutrition, sickness, and both friendly and unfriendly Native Americans along the journey. Despite this, the 8,000-mile voyage was regarded as a major success, providing “fresh topographical, biological, and sociological knowledge about previously unexplored portions of North America.”
